US Open 2019: Rise, Upsets but same old Rafa Nadal

The second-seed Spaniard Rafael Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 to clinch his 19th Grand Slam title and fourth in New York. The thrilling men's singles final saw an epic fight from Medvedev who stretched the final to five sets after going down two sets to love at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The final Grand Slam of the year had plenty of breath-taking moments. Early upsets, injuries, rise of the next-gen and taste of playing tennis at the Grand Slam stage for some newcomers.

Here are some of the highlights from the 2019 US Open:

Upsets! Upsets! Upsets!

One of the more rising talent on tour, Stefanos Tsitsipas had a short run at the US Open. The Greek got knocked out in round one by Andrey Rublev. Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov caused a major upset as he beat one of the favourites, Roger Federer in a 5-set clash. 17 out of the 32 seeded players didn't make it to the third round of the US Open.

Rise of the young guns

Unlike the last two Grand Slams, the US Open saw only one of the big three making it to the semis. Unseeded Russian Andrey Rublev enjoyed a good run but couldn’t get past M. Berrettini in the round of 16. He played some great tennis in his four matches. This edition also saw plenty of upsets during week one and a lot of credit goes to next set of young players including Andrey Rublev. A. De Minaur, M. Berrettini, A Zverev and D. Schwartzman.

Federer's fight

The Swiss Maestro was class above others till his quarter-final clash against Grigor Dimitrov. The 20-time Grand Slam champion lost in five-sets to the Bulgarian and this came as a shock to his fans.

The Italian surprise

Stefanos Tsitsipas' first round loss to Rublev made the third quarter of the draw wide open. But, the biggest surprise from that quarter came from the Italian sensation Matteo Berrettini. He became only the second Italian man since Corrado Barazzutti in 1977 to make it to the US Open final four.

Monfils being Monfils

Known for his acrobatics, the Frenchman Gael Monfils didn't disappoint the New York crowd. He won a five-set thriller against D. Shapovalov before going down against Matteo Berrettini in another epic five-set quarter-final match.

Djokovic’s injury & Wawrinka’s domination

The 2018 US Open Champion Novak Djokovic won his Round 1, 2 & 3 clash in straight sets. He was seen having trouble on his left shoulder and the pain got the better of the Serbian who couldn't complete his fourth round clash against Stan Wawrinka and retired in the 3rd set of his clash against the Swiss.

Sumit Nagal's Debut

India’s Sumit Nagal made it to the main draw after winning three rounds of qualifiers and grabbed a lot of eyeballs. Playing a Grand Slam is a dream for any professional tennis player. It becomes special when you have Roger Federer on the other side of the nets. India's Sumit Nagal lived that dream. He gave a fight and won the opening set before going down in four sets, 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6.
