Tata Open Maharashtra 2020 to be played in February

South Asia's only ATP World Tour Tennis Tournament, Tata Open Maharashtra will now be held in the first week of February 2020. The event has served as one of the season openers on the ATP calendar with the tournament being held in the first week of January for the last two years.

“With the introduction of the ATP Cup from 2020, week 1 was getting too crowded. ATP gave us the option of moving to Week 5 and we were happy to accept the proposal,” said Prashant Sutar, the Tournament Director. He also added, “This will allow us to engage with a new set of players going back to Europe from Australian Open.”

"The new schedule also means the tournament will be a week-long event unlike six days like the past two editions," said Sunder Iyer, Secretary General of the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association(MSLTA).

Tata Open Maharashtra attracted a host of International Tennis stars like Kevin Anderson, Gilles Simon and Ivo Karlovic to name a few. The event also consisted of Indian Tennis stars in Leander Paes, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Rohan Bopanna.

The 2019 edition of the tournament saw Kevin Anderson beat Ivo Karlovic in a jam-packed stadium at the Mhalunge Balewadi Stadium in the Men’s Singles whereas the top-seeded Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan beat Luke Bambridge and Jonny O’Mara to lift the Doubles Trophy.
